Period 3 Grammar

(The Present Continuous Tense for Future Actions)

整体设计

从容说课

This is the third teaching period of this unit. To test whether the students have grasped the important and difficult language points they learned in the last period, the teacher should first offer them some revision exercises. The pattern “It is. . . that/who. . . ” is a bit difficult, so special exercises should be designed.

This teaching period mainly deals with grammar and speaking. Firstly, the teacher can enjoy with the students the song “I’m babysitting on Thursday to ”present the Present Continuous Tense. The students are expected to make it clear that the Present Continuous Tense may be used to denote an action that can be pre-planned or prearranged instead of the future indefinite in colloquial English. But please note that, not all verbs can be used in the “-ing” form to express future actions. Such verbs as come, go, leave, fly, walk, ride, drive, stay, meet, die, see, have, arrive, etc. are mainly used in the “-ing” form to express future actions. Then do the exercises in Discovering useful structures on Page 21 and more for students to master this usage. Later on, ask them to make dialogues in pairs according to supposed situations. This can help the students connect grammar rules with proper language forms so as to make grammar rules less abstract. At the end of the class, do the exercises in Using structures on Page 57 and multiple choices as consolidation exercises.

Winter break travel journal (Part Ⅱ)

23rd Dec, 2006

The day has finally arrived for us to see the biggest water fall (by volume of water)on this planet—Niagara Falls. We caught the bus about 10 am, and it was a 2 hr trip to Niagara Falls. The town was very tacky, as Michael had described it. Perhaps too tacky for a town right next to one of the most famous natural sceneries in the world. We walked down Falls Ave and suddenly around the corner was a water fall. Bigger than any I’ve ever seen, but far less impressive than I had thought. It was disappointing really, because we’d expected to hike for a few miles and then reach this massive water fall. There was another water fall that appeared slightly smaller in the distance. It never occurred to us that we should walk towards it, so we didn’t. We walked the opposite direction, towards this place called ‘whirlpool’. It was a good long walk, but couldn’t see much. Civilization had come way too close to natural scenery. It kinda ruins the mood.

Finally we decided to head back, and that was when we met a Canadian guy in front of a buddhist temple. He rambled on and on about some bad energy or something. I didn’t really understand, but when I asked him where the nearest bus stop was, he offered us a ride. We gladly agreed, and he drove us back towards Niagara Falls. Along the way he talked a little about the facts and history of Niagara Falls. Apparently the entire Niagara River was a fault line with sandstone on one side and black graphite on the other. The water fall was about 17 km upstream from its present location tens of thousands of years ago but major earthquakes and shifts in tectonic plates would shift the location of the water fall. Geologists warned that the hills overlooking the fall would be totally flooded in a few hundred years, but that didn’t stop the rich people building resorts along the high ground. Ever since the Casino came in a few years ago, the bad energy started to overflow like crazy. Obviously this Canadian didn’t like the way the town was heading, and I couldn’t help but agree with him. It just didn’t seem right to have all those resorts overlooking a natural wonder like the Niagara Falls, and even more wrong to have a casino right next to it!

Nonetheless he took us to the‘small’ fall in the distance. The horse-shoe fall. The REAL Niagara Fall. The hugest and most magnificent water fall I have ever seen. It was awesome. (Please see pictures! )

After resting at a restaurant near the fall (resting by playing card games), we went back to the fall at night when the lights came on. It was over-done a little, but nonetheless amazing.

The Niagara Falls was one of the main motivations for traveling to Canada (I’ll go on about the other motivations later), and although disappointing to an extent, it was still the place to go.

24th Dec, 2006

I finally got in touch with my cousin Amy last night, who was the other main motivation for traveling to Canada. I planned to visit her and her mother on Christmas Eve.

In the morning we went to the Science Centre. It was good, but probably more suited to young children. We spent about 2 hours there, and I found out that the girls had stronger grip that I did. . . depressed. . .

We met with Amy at North York Centre station. I hadn’t seen her for over 10 years. She had grown up to be a beautiful young lady. She introduced us to Pacific Mall, the largest indoor Asian shopping mall in North America. I guess we’ll be going there on Christmas Day.

We stayed at her place for the entire afternoon and had dinner. Her mum and mum’s friend were great cooks.

25th Dec, 2006

Christmas Day!

It was going to be a day to sleep and relax a bit, until Grace woke up around 9:30 and woke us up about 11:00. It was too late for breakfast, so we went to Pacific Mall and ate at a buffet. It was so great. We went in starving and came out almost unable to walk.

Pacific Mall was exactly like the shopping malls in China! The girls were very excited, but Wei and I could not find any menswear. Being considerate and caring, the girls only walked around for about an hour and a half before we headed back to the hotel. It was a mistake. Everything in the CBD area was closed and we were so bored that we watched TV series till 8 pm. Wei and I went out to buy dinner in the rain, and that was the end of our Christmas.
