活动与探究

Go to the library or surf the Internet to collect materials like poems, songs, stories, and plays on friendship. Prepare for an English party on friendship.

Friendship is such a popular topic on which there are lots of stories, songs, poems and plays. After learning this unit, the students should be encouraged to collect as much material on this subject as they can from the library, media and the Internet. They may hold an English party, where they can put on performances, for example, reciting poems, singing songs, telling stories, etc. This is a good way to increase the students’ interest in learning English as well as enhance their understanding of friendship.

Suggested English song

Auld Lang Syne

should auld acquaintance be forgot,

and never brought to mind?

should auld acquaintance be forgot,

for the sake of auld lang syne. 

if you ever change your mind,

but I living, living me behind,

oh bring it to me, bring me your sweet loving,

bring it home to me.

I’ll give you jewelry and money too.

that s all all I’ll do for you.

oh bring it to me, bring me your sweet loving,

bring it home to me, yeah~ yeah~

darling you know I laughed when you left,

but now I know that I only hurt myself.

please bring it to me, bring your sweet sweet love,

bring it home to me, bring it home to me. 

if you ever change your mind,

but I living, living me behind,

oh bring it to me, bring me your sweet loving,

bring it home to me. 

for auld lang syne my dear,

for auld lang syne,

we’ll take a cup of kindness yet

for the sake of auld lang syne.

The song Auld Lang Syne can remind people to think of old friends and remember the good times of the past, as they look forward to the future. It is sung at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve in nearly every English-speaking country. This tradition is centuries old, but the version of the song that is sung today was written by Robert Burns in the 18th century. “Auld Lang Syne” comes from the old Scotch language and literally means “Old Long Age”(旧日时光) or “Good Old Days”(美好往昔). It was used as the theme song in the 1940 movie Waterloo Bridge (《魂断蓝桥》).

Suggested English little poem

Childhood Friends

   by Mindy Carpenter

As childhood friends, we grew up together,

Swearing to be friends forever and ever.

Sometimes we would argue and fight,

Other times we would laugh and stay up all night. 

We went from playing with games and toys,

To talking and dreaming about different boys.

My thoughts and feelings, to you I would confide,

Never having anything to hide. 

Friends we do remain,

Things changing, and things staying the same.

To each other we still listen and share,

About each other, we will always care.

英语朗诵短文

Passage 1

Everybody needs somebody, somebody whom is called “Friend”. “A friend in need is a friend indeed. ” If only that kind of friends can be called “Friends”, then there are only few up-to-standards for me. About friendship, we have millions of quotes to support my “saying”, “Friendship is nothing but giving. ” But for most of the time, we’re pleased with receiving things from others, instead of giving.

Well, I’m not saying friendship is based on stuff-giving, but it needs emotion exchange, like “I can give you nothing but friendship”, it sets up a very good example of friendship. Maybe we’re too concerning about others’ shortcomings, that we’ve missed a lot of friends-to-be. There are too many aspects about a good friend after all. So just take it easy, and let time do the rest.

 Passage 2

Friendship is one of the greatest pleasures that people can enjoy. It is very difficult to find a better definition of friendship. A true friend does indeed find pleasure in our joy and share sorrow in our grief. In time of trial, he or she is always at our side to give us his or her help and comfort. Knowing how valuable friendship is, we should be very careful in our choice of a friend. We must choose someone who has a good character, whose activities are good and who shows kindness of heart. We should avoid those shallow people who are easily changed by adversities or misfortune. A true friend can always be trusted, loved and respected. If you tell a friend your secrets, he or she won’t tell anyone else. Friends share each other’s joys and sorrows. They help each other when they are in trouble, and cheer each other up when they are sad. The most important thing is that a friend always understands you. In conclusion, when you have made a good friend, don’t forget him or her.

Passage 3

Friendship isn’t always easily described. The Eskimos, they say, have a hundred different words for snow. Unfortunately, the English language isn’t quite as innovative, though it has vast opportunities to differentiate meaning. Certainly, love is one of those opportunities. And so, too, is Friendship.

Instead of different words, however, we’re stuck with simple adjectives. Close friend. Best friend. Childhood friend. Intimate friend. Trusted friend. Beloved friend. But whether you use adjectives or different words, few could deny the nearly infinite meaning in such a simple word.

Friends are special people. We can’t pick our family, and we’re sorely limited in the number of them at any rate. Society and mores (and often our own conscience)dictate we select a single mate. But our friends can be as diverse and infinite as the adjectives we choose. Our friends, in a very real sense, reflect the choices we make in life.

Passage 4

A life without a friend is a life without a sun. Friendship is one of the most important things in everyone’s life. Friends are who changes your life just by being a part of it, who makes you believe that there really is good in the world, who convinces you that there really is an unlock door just waiting for you to open it. When you’re down, friends lift you up. When you lose your way, friends guide you and cheer you on. So cherish your friend, do not save your loving speeches, for your friends till they are dead. Do not write them on their tombstones, speak them rather now instead.

Passage 5

What is friendship? It is to relate with somebody without need for money or objective. It is to need emotion and over wealth is friendship, no matter what their background, age, sex or personality.

Friendship can be pure. We hear, nowadays, however, how friends can cheat one. Many people get along with someone because they have a lot of money. It is doubtful that is real friendship.

Having friends, one can find happiness. If you are in trouble your friends will help you through or at least comfort you. When you are happy, they share it with you. They are also there for you to chat with at any time.

It is a wonderful feeling, as the proverb says “to love each other is easy but to make friends is hard”. So, it is crucial that we should get along with our friends. In my opinion, it is a shame to deceive your friends. The world would be more beautiful if it was full of friendship.
